Wandering through Werribee

Ready for some outdoor fun? Embark on an al fresco adventure in Werribee that’ll have the whole family smiling.

11am

Take a trip to the African savannah by starting your day at the much-loved Werribee Open Range Zoo. Make a beeline towards the safari station. Here, you’ll be chauffeured around the 200 hectares that mirror the natural environments of the animals that call this zoo home. You could see zebras, camels, giraffes or ostrich grazing around right outside the safari vehicle. Next, meander down to say hello to the gorillas, lions and hippos.

1pm

A short drive away you’ll find the historic Werribee Mansion and its gardens — a picturesque spot for a family picnic. Roll out a rug and unpack your lunch while the kids run wild on the lush expanse of lawn. Enjoy taking in the perfectly manicured gardens and the grandeur of the Italianate-style mansion. If you’re curious about what’s inside, admission is around $10 for adults and $8 for kids. Don’t forget to take a look at the onsite sculpture park, too

2pm

Take a post-lunch stroll and head for Werribee Park Heritage and Farmyard Orchard, about a seven-minute walk from Werribee Mansion. This orchard dates back to the 1870s and has been lovingly restored by a local community group. If you’re lucky, there may be a fruit tasting or fruit grafting event running. Otherwise, explore the orchard and reflect on what farm life once was.

3pm

You’re within minutes of the Werribee River, so head down to its banks and admire the natural wonders. Sit back, relax and take in the breath-taking views at the K Road Cliffs. Otherwise, take the crew for a bushwalk and see what diverse birdlife you can spot along the way.

5pm

Why call it a day now? With the Werribee Park Mansion Hotel and Spa closeby, plus many more exciting outdoor experiences waiting to be discovered when you wake up — the National Equestrian Centre, Werribee Park Golf Club and Shadowfax Winery — it’s time to check in so the adventures can continue.
