Looking for a speedy way to get around that is super friendly to the environment? Cycling in Melbourne is the thing for you.

With an impressive network of bike tracks and on-road bike lanes, it couldn't be any easier to ride around Melbourne and explore the sites. Before you get riding, be sure you are up to speed on the road cycling code of conduct, road rules and traffic regulations – safety first! Most importantly, be sure to get a helmet as it is illegal not to wear one. You can purchase helmets for $5 from vending machines at Southern Cross Station and Melbourne University, and at 7-Eleven stores.

Once you have your helment, you should also get your hands on a copy of the TravelSmart map. This handy map provides information on cycling paths, plus the low-down on bike lanes, where to park your bike and more. Melbourne Bike Share

Around the city you will notice blue bike stands with bikes available to hire. These bikes are designed for short trips across the city and subscriptions to use the bikes can be purchase for as little as $2.90 per day. Just swipe your credit card (Visa or Mastercard accepted) and you can have wheels for half an hour, a couple of hours or a full day. You can then return your bike to any of the many central city docking stations. Fees are calculated according to how long you ride and are charged directly from your credit card.
